Questions

Frequently asked

What is the difference between cologne and perfume?

The difference is concentration, not gender. True "cologne" (Eau de Cologne) is a light 2–4% fragrance-oil concentration; perfume (parfum) is the strongest at 20–30%. In everyday American use, though, "cologne" just means men's fragrance. Full breakdown in our cologne vs perfume guide.

What is the difference between EDT and EDP?

EDP (Eau de Parfum) has more fragrance oil than EDT (Eau de Toilette), so it is stronger and lasts longer — roughly 5–8 hours versus 3–5. EDT is lighter and better for heat and casual wear. See the concentrations guide.

What is the best cologne for men?

For a safe, universally-flattering bottle, Dior Sauvage is the most-recommended answer — its only real flaw is ubiquity. Our full ranking is at best cologne for men.

What is a good cheap cologne that smells expensive?

Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man (a Creed Aventus clone) and Lattafa Khamrah both punch far above their price. See the best cologne dupes.

Are cologne dupes worth it?

Often, yes. A well-made clone from an established Arabian house gets you most of the way to a pricey icon for a fraction of the money. Set your expectations at "close, for a fraction," not "identical." More in our dupes guide.

What is the best Creed Aventus clone?

Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man, by a wide margin — its smoky-pineapple opening reads as Aventus to most noses. Read the full review and the clone comparison.

How many sprays of cologne should I use?

Two to four for most fragrances; fewer for strong beast-mode scents. You should catch it faintly when you move, while others discover it up close. Full details in how to apply cologne.

How do I make my cologne last longer?

Moisturize before spraying, apply to clothing as well as skin, and choose a higher concentration (EDP over EDT) when longevity matters. Don't rub your wrists together — it crushes the top notes. See the application guide.

What is the best cologne for beginners?

Safe, cheap, universally-liked bottles like Nautica Voyage are the right on-ramp. Our beginner ranking lists the best, and a sampler set is the smartest first buy.

What is the best summer cologne?

Fresh, aquatic and citrus scents that read crisp in heat. Armani Acqua di Gio is the classic; see the full best summer colognes list.

Where should I apply cologne?

On warm pulse points — the base of the neck, chest and inner forearms — from about six inches away. A spray on clothing makes it last longer. More in how to apply cologne.

What are top, heart and base notes?

The three tiers of a fragrance over time: top notes are the brief opening (minutes), heart notes the main body (hours), base notes the long-lasting foundation. Full explainer in fragrance notes explained.

Why can't I smell my own cologne after a while?

Nose fatigue — your brain tunes out a constant smell. It hasn't faded; everyone around you can still smell it. Resist re-spraying, or you'll wear too much.

How do I buy fragrance online without getting a fake?

Buy from mainstream marketplaces and established retailers, and be very wary of expensive designer bottles listed far below retail from unknown sellers. Sampling first sidesteps the problem entirely. See where to buy safely.

Why isn't Bleu de Chanel cheaper on Amazon?

Chanel restricts its distribution, so genuine full bottles are rarely deeply discounted, and a too-cheap listing is often a fake. Sample the real thing, then buy at a counter — or choose a clone. See our review.

How many colognes do I actually need?

Most people are well served by three: a fresh daily driver, a warm scent for cold weather and evenings, and one characterful signature you love. Start with a sampler set to find your lanes.

Do you actually test the fragrances you review?

No, and we say so plainly. We don't run a lab. Our assessments compile published data and aggregated owner reports, with first-hand impressions only where genuine. The whole method is on the how we review page.

How do you make money, and does it bias your reviews?

We earn Amazon Associates commissions when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict — we routinely recommend the cheaper bottle. We accept no free product and no paid placements. Full details in our disclosure.
