Buy Eros if you want one bottle that gets noticed, you wear fragrance mostly after dark, or you care what a milliliter costs — the size Amazon lists it in makes it a dramatically better buy than the listing Acqua di Gio currently sits on. Buy Acqua di Gio if you need something you can wear to work in July without a single person commenting, or if sweetness in a fragrance is a dealbreaker. These two are not competing for the same slot, and the most common mistake is treating them as if they are.
They solve opposite problems
Acqua di Gio was built by Alberto Morillas in 1996 and it essentially invented the modern men's aquatic. Fragrantica's pyramid runs lime, lemon, bergamot, orange, mandarin and neroli over an unusually crowded heart — sea notes, calone, rosemary, jasmine, peach, freesia, violet, coriander, rose and nutmeg among others — landing on white musk, cedar, oakmoss, patchouli and amber. Its community tags it citrus first, then aromatic and marine. Calone is the molecule doing the salt-air trick, and in 1996 it was a genuine shock; thirty years of imitation have made it the most familiar smell in the men's aisle.
Eros arrived in 2012 with a far simpler structure and a completely different objective: mint, green apple and lemon on top, tonka bean, ambroxan and geranium in the heart, Madagascar vanilla over Virginian and Atlas cedar, vetiver and oakmoss underneath. Its accords lead vanilla, then aromatic and green. That combination — a bracing mint-apple opening collapsing into sweet vanilla — is why people either adore it or find it adolescent, and there is not much middle ground.
In practice: Acqua di Gio is transparent, salty and cool, and it disappears into a room. Eros is sweet, loud and unmistakable, and it does not. If you are picking a first or only bottle, that single sentence should decide most of it before any number does.

One note on that table, because it matters for honesty: Parfumo's entry for the original Acqua di Gio eau de toilette could not be resolved cleanly during this run, so we quote no Parfumo figure for either fragrance rather than compare one against nothing. Everything above comes from Fragrantica and from the live Amazon listings.
What the numbers actually say
The community gap is narrow and it favors the older bottle: 4.12 against 4.05, from 26,105 and 31,369 votes. Those are both enormous samples, so the difference is real, but seven hundredths of a point is not a verdict — it is a tie with a slight lean.
What is interesting is that Eros has the larger vote count and the larger pile of written reviews despite being sixteen years younger. That is the signature of a fragrance people have strong opinions about. Acqua di Gio's score is the score of something nobody dislikes; Eros's is the score of something a lot of people love and a meaningful minority cannot stand. Neither number tells you which one suits you, which is why the sections above matter more than this one.
On Parfumo, where only Eros has a resolvable entry, its members put it at 7.5 out of 10 for scent across 4,891 ratings, with longevity and sillage both at 7.5 and value for money at 7.8 across 3,581 ratings, ranked 49th in men's perfume. Those are solid, unremarkable numbers for a fragrance with this much reputation — which is roughly the honest summary of Eros generally.
The listing sizes are the real story
Here is where this comparison stops being about smell. The Amazon listing we link for Acqua di Gio is a 30 ml bottle. The one for Eros is 100 ml. Both are legitimate, in-stock, correctly-titled listings — but a three-times-smaller bottle at designer pricing produces a cost per milliliter that is in a different league, and a sticker price tells you none of that.
The table below divides each live price by its actual volume, so you are comparing like with like. Both figures update automatically and are stamped with the time they were read — we never write prices into articles.
| Bottle | Size | Price | Per ml | What you get for it |
|---|
| Armani Acqua di Gio — the originalThe fragrance that defined the category. The listing is a small bottle, and the per-milliliter figure reflects that, not the quality of the juice. | 30 ml | $52.70 | $1.76 | The benchmark aquatic |
| Versace ErosSweet, minty, vanilla-heavy and loud. Sold here in a far larger bottle, which is most of why it wins this page. | 100 ml | $64.96 | $0.65 | The opposite argument |
| Lattafa Fakhar (Men)Neither a clone of nor a substitute for either, but it is the cheap bright-fruity-fresh in our catalog and the sane place to start if you are not sure you want a flagship at all. | 100 ml | $29.40 | $0.29 | The budget fresh |
#ad · Prices are live from the Amazon Product API, as of November 1, 2026, and per-milliliter is calculated from them. Where we have no verified live price we show a dash rather than a number that has rotted. Closeness calls are our editorial judgment, not lab measurements.
That third row is not filler. If you are reading this because you want your first good bottle rather than because you have narrowed it to two, spending a fraction of either price to find out whether you even like fresh fragrance is a better move than either flagship. The full case is in our beginner ranking.
Which one is for you
Buy Acqua di Gio ifyour fragrance has to be invisible in a professional setting, you wear it mostly in daylight and warm weather, or you actively dislike sweetness. It is the safest men's fragrance ever made and that is both the compliment and the criticism. Our office ranking explains why that quality is worth more than it sounds.
Buy Eros if you want to be noticed, you wear fragrance in the evening, or you are buying one bottle on a budget and the per-milliliter gap matters to you. Be aware that it is extremely widely worn and that the sweetness is not subtle — two sprays, not four.
Buy neither if you already own a blue designer fresh. Acqua di Gio in particular occupies the same wardrobe slot as half the aquatics on the market, and if you have one you like, a second is not an upgrade. Our Acqua di Gio versus Cool Water comparison covers the nearest version of that question.
Before you buy either
Both are families, not bottles
Acqua di Gio has spawned Profumo, Absolu, Parfum and the Acqua di Gio Profondo line, and they do not smell like the original — Profondo in particular is a much darker marine. Eros has Flame, Parfum and an Energy; Eros Flame is a spicy-woody fragrance that shares a name and little else. Ordering the wrong one off a thumbnail is the single most common complaint attached to both lines. Our guide to flankers explains why the naming is so consistently misleading.
Buy the size, not the sticker
This page exists partly as a demonstration of that rule. A 30 ml bottle at a slightly lower sticker price than a 100 ml bottle is not the cheaper purchase, and fragrance is sold in enough different volumes that the comparison is genuinely hard to do in your head. The table above does the arithmetic on whatever listings are live today; the general version of the argument, including roughly how many wearings a bottle gives you, is in how many sprays are in a bottle.
Acqua di Gio is heavily counterfeited
Thirty years of ubiquity makes it one of the most faked fragrances in the category, and the tell is almost always price: a full-size bottle at a fraction of the going rate is the warning, not the bargain. Eros is faked too, though less aggressively. Our spot a fake cologne guide covers the packaging and batch-code checks, and is the cologne you buy online real covers how to read the listing itself.
Season matters more here than usual
Acqua di Gio in February smells thin and slightly sad. Eros in August is cloying on most people. These two are unusually seasonal for mainstream designers, and if you only intend to own one bottle, buy for the half of the year you actually go out in. Our summer ranking and winter ranking split the catalog along exactly that line.
