Buy the original Lattafa Asad if you want one bottle. It is the warmer, boozier, higher-performing fragrance and it is the one that built the name — a dark amber-tobacco night-out scent for under thirty dollars. Asad Zanzibar is not a stronger or weaker version of it; it is a different fragrance that happens to share a word, built around lavender, black pepper, coconut water, iris and salt over vanilla and incense. Buy Zanzibar only if you specifically want a cool, salty, hot-weather bottle. If the warm lane is what you are after and Asad is too boozy, Lattafa Khamrah at number three is the better-behaved version of the same idea.
The naming problem comes first
There are now at least four bottles in this family — Asad, Asad Zanzibar, Asad Zanzibar Limited Edition and Asad Elixir — and the listings for them are routinely confused, including in bundles that ship the black Asad alongside a Zanzibar without making clear which Zanzibar it is. The 2024 original Zanzibar and the 2025 Limited Edition are different compositions: the Limited Edition leads with marine notes, lavender and pink pepper over soap, cashmeran and cinnamon, finishing on amber, sandalwood, cedar and tonka, and reviewers frequently compare it to Invictus Parfum rather than to its own namesake.
Before you buy either, read the full product title on the listing, not the thumbnail. Our flanker guide covers how this naming pattern works across the industry and which kinds of flanker are worth paying for.
How they actually smell
Asadis the dark one. Amber and tobacco with a boozy edge, pitched squarely at cold-weather evenings, and loud enough that two sprays is a decision rather than a default. It is one of the clearest value propositions in the whole budget tier, and it has been the backbone of this site's amber and dupe rankings since they were written.
Asad Zanzibar is the cool one. Lavender and black pepper open it, coconut water, iris and salt sit in the middle, and vanilla and incense close it. The result reads as airy and slightly saline rather than sweet — the effect people mean when they say a fragrance smells like skin on a warm day. It is, by some distance, the most unusual thing the house has released in this price band, and opinion on it is genuinely split: a recurring comment on Fragrantica is that Lattafa made something truly unique and the reviewer is not sure it works.

Which one is for you
Buy Asad ifyou want the house's signature: warm, boozy, dark, and loud for the money. It is the safer buy and the one that will get used more in most climates.
Buy Zanzibar if the rest of the Lattafa catalog is too sweet for you, or you want a hot-weather bottle that is not another citrus-aquatic. Buy it knowing opinion is divided — this is a bottle to sample rather than to buy on a recommendation, including ours.
Buy both if you already know you want a warm bottle and a cool one, since between them they cover the calendar at a combined price below one designer bottle. That is the strongest argument for the pair, and it is the reason the bundles exist.

Give Zanzibar time before you judge it
Several owner reports say Zanzibar improves with maceration — that a new bottle smells thinner than one that has sat for a few weeks. This is one of the most commonly repeated claims about this specific bottle. Our maceration guide separates what is physically plausible from what is probably just your nose adjusting.
Do not buy two bottles in the same lane
The real trap with a house this cheap is ending up with five warm amber bottles that smell like each other. Asad, Khamrah and Asad Elixir all live in overlapping territory. If you already own one of them, Zanzibar is the more useful second purchase precisely because it is unlike the rest — see best Lattafa fragrances for the full map of the house.
Watch the dose with Asad
It performs well above its price and it is easy to overapply. Two sprays for a room, three for outdoors. The most common complaint about budget amber bottles is volume, not quality — see how many sprays.
Sample before you commit to Zanzibar
Salt, iris and coconut water is an unusual combination and a genuinely polarizing one. A decant costs a fraction of a bottle and settles the question in an afternoon.
